- A single bite from a tick can transmit multiple diseases.
- There are 15 species of ticks in Virginia.
- A female deer tick can lay up to 3,000 eggs at one time.

- Ticks are infected with the Lyme bacterium during the larvae stage of their development by feeding on infected white-footed mice.
- Deer are the vehicle to carry the tick to different environments.
- Deer that carry infected ticks are not infected with Lyme disease. Their blood carries a factor that breaks down the Lyme bacterium.
Tick Removal Tips
- Using fine-tipped tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward.
- Try not to twist or jerk the tick when pulling out - may cause parts of the tick to remain in the skin.
- Don't squeeze the tick.
- Don't use alcohol, nail polish, petroleum jelly or heat to remove the tick.
- Thoroughly disinfect the site after removal; wash hands with soap and water.
- Seal the tick in a plastic bag, store in freezer and bring to local health department for testing.
